Officer Phillip S. Riley was shot and killed on Monday, October 25, 1971, by a grand theft auto suspect. He was a member of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Venice Division.

Deputy Barry Hoffman was assigned to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Lennox Station at the time of his murder. Deputy Hoffman and his partner, Deputy Mike Kenyon, were interrogating two suspects near a bar in Lawndale, in the south bay area of Los Angeles County. The suspects attempted to break away, a struggle ensued and Deputy Hoffman was shot in the head. He died five days later.
