Andrew Kriss was a Deputy Sheriff for San Diego County. In 1865, he was ordered to pick up 291 horses in Rancho de Las Viejas that had been attached from owner Bill Williams, a white rebel and Indian agitator, by Constable F. L. Brill. On Kriss’ return to San Diego, the horses were run off by two Californios (native California Mexicans). Deputy Kriss trailed the bandits into Mexico, where they killed him.
