Det. Charles R. Harris was killed on April 3, when a hidden gunman ambushed him and his partner.

Harris returned fire as the suspect ran away but did not hit him. He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Harris’ murder was never solved.

He had been with the San Diego Police Department for 17 years.

His wife survived Harris.
