Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Constable William Funkhouser was assigned to the San Dimas Station when he was murdered. Thomas Cervantes hailed Constable Funkhouser to report two burglaries, stating that he knew which way the man was headed. Cervantes and Funkhouser overtook the burglar on the railroad tracks a mile east of San Dimas. Just as Funkhouser discovered jewelry in the man’s pockets, he was hit hard by the suspect and his revolver was lost in the darkness. A fight ensued, a different weapon discharged and Funkhouser lay dead. Cervantes claimed he wrestled the gun from the suspect who ran off into the mountains. Posses were sent out, and a man was apprehended. However, Cervantes said it was not the right man. The case was never solved.
