Born in Seattle, Washington in 1910, Maywood Police Officer Clarence Bower moved to Los Angeles with his parents. At the age of 34, he was killed in a motorcycle accident while attempting to stop a speeder on Atlantic Boulevard. The driver of the vehicle he was attempting to stop suddenly swerved on 55th Street. As Patrolman Bower attempted to make the turn, his motorcycle struck the curb and he was thrown to the ground. He was taken to Maywood Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. He was laid to rest at Forest Lawn Memorial Park next to his mother who also dies in 1944. The Maywood Police Department was disbanded in 2010 with the city now contracts with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Officer Bower was the first of three officers killed in the Line of Duty with the Maywood Police Department. As a tribute to the 82-year history of the Maywood Police Department, the East Los Angeles Sheriff Station took possession of the city’s memorials of the officers.
